Sneak Peek: BMW X5M (G95)

BMW M is preparing for a new era of high-performance SUVs, and the next-generation BMW X5 M could become one of the most powerful examples yet.

Recent spy photos have revealed a heavily camouflaged prototype of a fully electric BMW X5 M undergoing testing in Germany. While many details remain under wraps, early reports point toward an SUV that combines the performance expected from a true BMW M model with an entirely electric powertrain.

A New Look for the X5 M

Even beneath the camouflage, the upcoming X5 M appears to have several design elements that separate it from the standard electric X5.

One of the most noticeable changes is an M-specific interpretation of BMW’s kidney grille. The prototype features a more three-dimensional, upright design along with substantially larger lower air intakes. These openings are expected to help manage cooling for the vehicle’s high-performance electric motors, battery, and brakes.

The prototype also features a sportier rear design and an additional spoiler element. Other expected M details include an aggressive rear diffuser and BMW’s distinctive yellow daytime running light signature.

Four Electric Motors and Serious Performance

The biggest change, however, is underneath.

The electric BMW X5 M is expected to use a four-motor system, with one electric motor powering each wheel. BMW M’s sophisticated electronic controls could then precisely manage power at each individual wheel to maximize acceleration, handling, and traction.

While BMW has not announced official specifications, current reports suggest the electric X5 M could produce approximately 800 to 900 horsepower.

That would place it among the most powerful BMW production vehicles ever created and give the X5 M performance worthy of its iconic M badge.

Electric Doesn’t Mean the V8 Is Going Away

BMW enthusiasts who aren’t ready to give up the sound and character of a V8 shouldn’t worry just yet.

BMW is also expected to offer a combustion-powered version of the next-generation X5 M alongside the electric model. The gas-powered version is anticipated to continue using BMW’s twin-turbocharged V8 with electrification incorporated into the powertrain.

That means future X5 M customers could ultimately have a choice between traditional V8 performance and an entirely new electric interpretation of BMW M.

It’s Still an X5 M

Interestingly, BMW isn’t expected to call the electric model the “iX5 M.”

BMW M has indicated that its fully electric M vehicles will retain the traditional M naming structure rather than being separated with BMW’s “i” designation.

So even without a combustion engine under the hood, this high-performance SUV is expected to simply remain the BMW X5 M.

When Could the Electric BMW X5 M Arrive?

The next-generation X5 M is still some time away. Current reports point toward production beginning at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in April 2028, with a potential market launch following later that year.

A lot can change before then, and BMW has not yet revealed final performance figures, pricing, range, or complete specifications.

Still, the prototypes give us an exciting first glimpse at what could be one of the biggest transformations in the history of BMW M.

With an estimated 800 to 900 horsepower, four electric motors, unmistakable M styling, and BMW’s latest electric technology, the next BMW X5 M could redefine what drivers expect from a high-performance luxury SUV.
